We are overwhelmed with the generous offers of support from residents for the Afghan families that we are resettling here in South Cambs. Thank you! The number one priority is for housing so we are very relieved that we are able to immediately offer homes for three families in the first instance.

As well as safe and comfortable homes to build a base for their new lives, these families also need practical support to adjust to life in the UK, with access to everything from GPs and welfare, to skills training and school places for children.

Other types of support will also be needed, especially because many of the families have only been able to travel with a few personal possessions. Through our local partnership, we are working with experienced professionals in a resettlement team, just as we did when we resettled Syrian refugees. Once the families have arrived in their homes in South Cambs, we will have a better understanding of their specific needs. Meanwhile, here is a list of the kind of support needed for all refugees arriving in the wider area with which you can help, either as individuals or as local groups. Councils are stepping up all over the country but there is a desparate shortage of affordable and social rent housing. Like us, many Councils are, therefore, using their own private rental stock. We have received offers from residents who are ready to offer accommodation. We cannot coordinate these offers of help but there are organisations that can. We have all been shocked by the images that have come to us in real time from Afghanistan over the last few weeks, and particularly in the last few days with the horrifying attack at the airport. The UK has a proud history of providing sanctuary to those in need and we will do so once again.
